Primary Montessori School Program | Irvine, California
There's something so special about this stage of childhood, the questions, the stories, the "I have an idea!" moments that seem to appear out of nowhere. At Spectrum Montessori, our Primary Montessori School Program is where that spark is protected, guided, and given real tools to grow. Our Primary Montessori Program is designed for children ages 2.5 to 6 who are ready to dive deeper into learning, build strong academic foundations, and develop independence in a calm, respectful Montessori classroom. Rather than asking children to sit still and simply listen, our Montessori program invites them to move, explore, and work with beautiful materials that bring math, language, science, and culture to life. Curriculum Focus
Our Primary Montessori program blends meaningful academics with real-life skills, creativity, and joyful social learning. Through hands-on work in Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, and Cultural Studies, children build strong habits, deep understanding, and a lasting love of discovery.
Daily Routine
Primary days at Spectrum Montessori unfold with a gentle, predictable rhythm that helps children feel grounded, confident, and ready to learn. Throughout the day, they enjoy long uninterrupted work periods, outdoor play, movement, group stories, and quiet moments for reading or reflection.
Classroom Experience
At Spectrum Montessori, our mixed-age Primary environment creates a natural community of learners, where younger students gain confidence by observing older classmates, and older children strengthen their understanding by gently modeling skills for their peers. Throughout the day, you'll see children working both independently and together at child-sized tables, choosing from beautifully organized materials that are always within reach.
About Our Primary Montessori School Program
The Primary years bring such a wonderful shift, your child starts asking deeper questions, noticing more of the world, and soaking up information with incredible enthusiasm. We understand this can feel like a big transition for families, and at Spectrum Montessori, we're here to support you every step of the way. Grounded in the Montessori method, our Primary Program gives children room to choose meaningful work while learning within gentle, consistent boundaries. Using hands-on materials across language, math, science, culture, art, and music, students transform big ideas into real understanding. As Maria Montessori said, these early years are when the "absorbent mind" shines, and we treat that stage with the respect, warmth, and intentionality it deserves.
From Age 2 and a Half to 6 Years: Development Support for Every Stage
The Primary years are filled with such meaningful "firsts", first words sounded out, first math discoveries, first moments of real empathy and leadership. At Spectrum Montessori, we cherish this stage and support your child gently, whether they're entering preschool or preparing for kindergarten. Children progress at their own pace, guided by observation rather than pressure. Whether they're building early literacy, exploring number relationships, or learning to care for their classroom, we encourage them to take ownership of their work and feel proud of each milestone.
Practical Life & Growing Independence
In our Primary Montessori School program, children still love being trusted with real responsibilities, and Practical Life work gives them purposeful ways to participate. Preparing snacks, polishing objects, watering plants, and caring for materials all build coordination, concentration, and confidence. These tasks strengthen fine motor skills and patience while helping children see themselves as capable contributors. Their growing independence becomes the foundation for both academic learning and everyday life skills.
Sensorial Exploration & Thinking Skills
Sensorial materials in our Primary Montessori classrooms help children refine how they experience the world through sight, touch, sound, and movement. Children explore dimensions with the Pink Tower, listen closely with sound cylinders, and sort colors into thoughtful gradients. This sensorial work quietly supports early math, geometry, and science, helping children classify, compare, and think logically. It strengthens focus, language, and problem-solving skills across all subject areas.
Language Development & Early Writing
Language grows naturally in our Primary Montessori program, where stories, conversations, and phonetic games are part of each day. Children trace sandpaper letters, build words with the Moveable Alphabet, and progress into writing and reading at their own pace. As confidence builds, they begin creating labels, short stories, and reading simple books. It's no surprise that 97% of our Primary students read at or above a 1st-grade level.
Mathematics & Problem-Solving
Math in our Primary Montessori School program is hands-on and joyful. Beads, number rods, and golden bead materials help children understand quantity, place value, and operations through real, concrete experiences. Because they see and feel math long before it becomes abstract, children develop true number sense and confidence. By the end of our Primary program, 98% of our students meet or exceed national 1st-grade math benchmarks.
Cultural Studies, Science, History & the Wider World
Children are naturally curious about the world, and our Cultural curriculum feeds that curiosity in meaningful, child-friendly ways. Puzzle maps, botany and zoology cards, simple experiments, and early history stories help them understand their place in a wider world. These lessons are woven into daily learning, nurturing respect, cultural appreciation, and early scientific thinking. Children begin to see the beauty, order, and interconnectedness of nature and humanity.
Social-Emotional Growth & Leadership
One of the most beloved aspects of the Primary Montessori school classroom is its multi-age community. Younger students learn by observing older classmates, while older children practice kindness, leadership, and responsibility.
Concentration, Movement & the Work Cycle
Spectrum's Primary Montessori students follow long, uninterrupted work periods that help children build deep focus. They choose purposeful work, engage with it fully, then clean up and move to the next activity. This builds internal discipline and joy in learning. Movement is woven naturally into the day through carrying materials, rolling mats, and navigating the classroom with care. This balance of freedom and gentle structure helps children feel calm, capable, and ready to learn.
Exploration in a Carefully Prepared Montessori Classroom
Classrooms at our Woodbury and Portola Springs campuses are designed to feel warm, ordered, and full of possibility. Every detail supports independence, confidence, and curiosity. It reflects Dr. Maria Montessori's belief that "The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences."

We transferred our daughter here when we found out Ms. Jaimee was joining the school. She led a great charge at the school we, previously, attended. She positively changed the environment, brought a wonderful learning and fun atmosphere, and hired some exceptional staff. On top of that, meeting with Ms Josie put it over the top. Wonderful educator in every sense. Excited for our daughter to thrive here.

We have tried two other preschools in our area for our son and daughter and nothing compares to Spectrum Montessori. The beautiful facilities that are so well taken care of are wonderful, but what truly shines is the teachers and administrators. Their love and care for each and every child that comes through their doors is truly unmatched. Mrs. Brenda is a phenomenal Director and takes the time to know each student and their families, always being available and encouraging at every step. Ms. Cassy and Ms. Monse are our daughter's teachers and I cannot tell you how much they have changed how our daughter sees school. She is excited at every drop off and every pick up she is chatting about her day and all of the things she got to do. Our daughter has truly blossomed and feels like part of a community at Spectrum Montessori. We are so lucky to have found this school!
